Choosing field operations & workforce software
Field tools capture daily reports, time, crews and labor planning from the people doing the work.
Our own general advice, not a recommendation of any product.
Questions to ask on every demo
- Does it work offline on a job site with poor signal?
- How easy is it for a crew member to use on a phone with gloves on and five minutes to spare?
- How does time data flow into payroll and job costing?
- Can I set up pay rules for overtime, prevailing wage or union reporting if I need them?
- Who on my team will review what the field enters, and how often?
What to watch for
- Adoption is the real risk. A field tool nobody uses produces no data.
- If you run certified payroll, check it supports your reporting format before you commit.
If you are a small firm
Pilot with one crew for a few weeks. If they will not use it, a better feature list will not fix that.
Terms you will hear
- Certified payroll
- A weekly payroll report, required on many public projects, that shows each worker’s classification, hours and pay to demonstrate compliance with prevailing wage rules.
- Daily log (daily report)
- A record of what happened on site each day: weather, crews, work done, deliveries, visitors and issues.
- Prevailing wage
- A minimum wage rate set by a government authority for specified trades on public work. Contractors must pay at least that rate and often report it.
- Punch list
- A list of items that remain to be corrected or completed near the end of a project before final acceptance.
