Choosing progress tracking & reality capture software
Reality capture records what is actually on site, with 360° cameras, drones, scanners or fixed cameras, so progress and conditions can be reviewed remotely.
Our own general advice, not a recommendation of any product.
Questions to ask on every demo
- What hardware does it need, and is that included in the price?
- How long after capture does the result appear?
- Can I compare captures over time, and against plans or a model?
- Who can view the imagery, and can I share it with owners and subs without a login?
- How long is the imagery stored, and what does it cost to keep it?
What to watch for
- Hardware, storage and per-project fees can all be priced separately.
- Ask who is responsible for capturing: a superintendent already stretched thin will skip it.
If you are a small firm
Start with one active project and a simple capture routine before committing to a platform for every job.
Terms you will hear

- Digital twin
- A digital representation of a building or site that is kept up to date with real-world data, so it can be used to track progress or operate the asset.
- Reality capture
- Recording the physical state of a site with 360° cameras, drones, laser scanners or fixed cameras, for documentation and progress comparison.
