Choosing bid management & preconstruction software
These tools help you find projects, invite and level bids, and manage subcontractor pursuit before the work is won.
Our own general advice, not a recommendation of any product.
Questions to ask on every demo
- Is it built for the side I am on: the GC inviting bids or the subcontractor receiving invitations?
- Which project types and regions does the lead or bid-board data cover?
- How are bids compared: can I level scope and exclusions side by side?
- Can invited subs respond without paying or creating an account?
- How does it connect to my estimating software and subcontractor database?
What to watch for
- A lead source is only useful if it covers the work you actually bid; check your market, not the national headline.
- Some platforms are free to one side of a transaction and paid for the other. Ask who pays.
If you are a small firm
If you are a subcontractor, see which of the bid platforms your GCs already use before paying for another.
Terms you will hear
- Bid leveling
- Comparing bids from several subcontractors or suppliers on the same basis by adjusting for differences in scope, exclusions and alternates.
- Prequalification
- Screening a subcontractor before inviting it to bid, typically on experience, financial strength, safety record and capacity.
- Scope of work
- The description of what a contractor or subcontractor will and will not do on a project.
