Analysis Two of Autodesk's Three Revit MCP Servers Can Change Your Model. Autodesk Suggests Backing It Up First. Autodesk's own documentation lists three Revit MCP servers — Read, Write and Experimental — and warns that two of them can modify your model. An AEC Magazine interview published on 2 November argues that firms are meanwhile accumulating AI-built tools without named owners. Hugo Pegley · Nov 2, 2026
Analysis Buildots Didn't Just Win a Pilot at NCC. It Won a Procurement Document. A Master Services Agreement naming Buildots a preferred supplier to NCC Building Nordics covers a business area that NCC's own 2025 figures put at 23 percent of group net sales and 20 percent of group employees. The release gives no contract value and no term, and reports a 230 percent rise in Percent Plan Complete on one project. Hugo Pegley · Nov 2, 2026
Analysis A Construction Robotics Summit Hit Its 150-Seat Capacity. Its Pitch Is That Demos Don't Count. Groundworks runs on 11 November at UCL Here East with a live demo floor — UCL, Hilti, Mechasys, Flo Mobility and Hyperion Robotics — and main-stage speakers the organisers place at Mace, VINCI, HS2, McKinsey and the UK Department for Business and Trade. The framing is the interesting part: the programme is built around whether a robot can be got onto a live site, not around whether it works. Hugo Pegley · Oct 29, 2026
Analysis Korea Is Funding the Simulator Before the Autonomous Excavator. The Hard Part Is the Dirt. HD Hyundai XiteSolution said on 25 October it will lead a government-funded consortium building a high-precision digital twin platform for AI-driven unmanned excavators, on a 6.33 billion won budget running to December 2029. The component list is the tell: hydraulics, multibody dynamics, powertrains — and the interaction between the machine and the soil. Hugo Pegley · Oct 27, 2026
Analysis The Government Has Written Down What Makes a Construction Robot Dangerous. The Factory Playbook Doesn't Transfer. NIOSH published a bulletin called 'Safety in Construction Robotics' on 7 October, nineteen days before Bedrock Robotics announced a $600 million Series C. Its central technical claim is narrow and awkward: the safety engineering that works in a factory assumes a workspace that holds still, and a job site does not. The list of sensor-degradation hazards reads like a list of ordinary weather. Hugo Pegley · Oct 27, 2026
Analysis A 29-Person DPR Study Says AI Hits Hospital Operations Long Before It Hits the Building A qualitative study of 29 people from the self-performing contractor argues AI will change how healthcare organisations work well before it changes their buildings — and that the capital-planning response is optionality, not smaller floor plates. DPR's announcement says 91% of respondents see project-delivery silos breaking down. Hugo Pegley · Oct 26, 2026
Analysis Two AI Takeoff Benchmarks Landed Eleven Weeks Apart. They Don't Agree on How Good the Models Are. Togal.AI has published Construction's Last Exam, 33 quantity-takeoff tasks on real drawings, with a public per-model scoreboard. The top general-purpose model on it scores 34.0; two score under 2. A rival takeoff benchmark from Handoff, published in July, puts frontier models in the 40s and 50s — and the disagreement is more informative than either number. Hugo Pegley · Oct 19, 2026
Analysis 28% of US AEC Firms Run AI in Production. A Year Ago Bluebeam's Number Was 27%. Bluebeam's 2027 AEC Technology Outlook, published 13 October, reports adoption flat and the middle of the market filling up: 7% with AI across multiple core workflows, 32% parked in pilots, 31% exploring. Its methodology section is the part worth reading: it tells readers why its own year-over-year comparison should not be read as a trendline. Hugo Pegley · Oct 15, 2026
Analysis UpCodes Ran Its AI Over 1,300 Plan Sets. The Most Common Critical Finding Was a Missing Exit Sign. Four months after launching AI Plan Review, UpCodes has published what it found: 180,000+ potential issues across 1,300+ plan sets in 73 jurisdictions, an average of 21 critical issues per set, and 46% of those critical issues in life-safety systems. The $1m-per-project cost figure is modelled, and the release's own footnote says so. Hugo Pegley · Oct 14, 2026
Analysis Buildots Benchmarked 21 Construction Activities. Twenty of Them Delivered Less Than the Schedule Assumed. The Intelligence Lab's first Global Construction Benchmarks Report, published 8 October, puts on-time starts at 29.3%, schedule adherence at 52.8% and undelivered weekly output at 37%. The numbers come from site capture rather than a survey, which is the genuinely new thing about them — and the full report is gated behind a form, so this piece works from the release and the landing page. Analysis Bentley Called 2026 a 'New Cycle of AI-Enabled Innovation'. Its Own Awards List Shows What That Means in Practice Bentley Systems named the winners of its 2026 Year in Infrastructure Awards in Singapore on 7 October: 12 category winners and 16 Founders' Honors from 300-plus nominations across 53 countries. Three of the 28 recognised projects name AI in the project or award title; Bentley's own August finalists release put it differently, at 24 of 36 finalists reporting AI use. The CMO's argument was less about models than about who owns the data they read. Hugo Pegley · Oct 9, 2026
Analysis 46 Architecture Firms Are Trying to Agree What a Building Product Is. Materials Are Half the Money. The Innovation Design Consortium has named Acelab co-development partner on an open material data standard, built on a shared ontology so product information is published once and reused. The consortium's figure for what is at stake: 46 member firms, about 30,000 design professionals, 10,000-plus projects a year — and materials at 40 to 50 percent of construction cost. Analysis Arcadis Is Plugging Its Own MCP Server Into Autodesk Assistant — and Keeping the Keys The expanded collaboration announced on 28 September carries one hard number: in one example, automation has cut quality reviews from five days to about half a day, drawn from Arcadis initiatives already running in North America and Europe. The more consequential sentence is that Arcadis connects its own Model Context Protocol capabilities to Autodesk Assistant 'while retaining full ownership of what it builds.' Having already taken equity in an AEC AI startup this year, the firm is behaving like a platform rather than a licensee. Hugo Pegley · Oct 5, 2026
Analysis The AI Buildout Just Put the Building Trades Out Front On 28 September, OpenAI, Blackstone, SoftBank and a roster of data-centre developers and operators launched the American Infrastructure Alliance alongside five construction unions and two Ohio labour bodies. It will campaign in seven states ahead of the 2027 legislative sessions. We argued in July that permission, not power, was the binding constraint on the buildout — this is what the industry does about that. Hugo Pegley · Oct 2, 2026
Analysis Accenture Folded Eleven Acquisitions and 5,000 Practitioners Into One Construction Business Accenture Construct launched on 23 September, folding a capital projects practice the company says has grown fourfold in three years into a single global unit aimed at data centres, grids and rail. Accenture puts the addressable market at $260 billion. The interesting part is who it competes with. Hugo Pegley · Sep 30, 2026
Analysis Aurigo's ISO/IEC 42001 Certification Is Aimed at the RFP, Not the Model The Austin capital-program software company announced on 22 September that its AI management system has been independently audited against ISO/IEC 42001. A management-system standard certifies how a company governs AI, not whether any particular output is right — and Aurigo's release says plainly where it expects the certificate to be read: procurement. Analysis 62% of Commercial Contractors Have Tried AI. Among Those Using It, 15% Can Show Clear ROI. ServiceTitan's 2026 Commercial State of the Trades, published 24 September, reports a July survey of 1,020 commercial contractors, primarily in mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Its AI findings describe a sector past the question of whether to try and stuck on the question of what it returned — and the cash-flow numbers underneath them explain why that question is being asked now. Analysis Caterpillar's Physical-AI Deal Is About Watching, Not Driving Caterpillar is putting FieldAI's robot foundation models to work on inspections, digital twins and situational awareness. No terms, no timeline, no machine named — and read the list of applications carefully, because not one of them operates a machine. Hugo Pegley · Sep 11, 2026
Analysis Construction's AI Drawing Reviewers Have Started Absorbing Each Other Plangrep is joining Buildcheck nine months after Buildcheck's $5.9M seed. Terms were not disclosed — but which layer of the stack got bought says something about where the hard problem actually is. Hugo Pegley · Sep 8, 2026
Analysis Construction's AI Problem Is That Nobody Shares. Virginia Tech Is Building a Reddit for It. The Coalition for Smart Construction is building a digital commons where builders — especially small ones — can compare notes on technology they cannot individually afford to evaluate. Pilot testing starts in October. It is not an AI product, and that is rather the point. Hugo Pegley · Sep 2, 2026
Analysis Someone Stole a Payroll File From America's Largest Contractor. They Say They Also Took the Drawings. Turner Construction has notified 6,098 Californians that their SSNs and bank details were taken. The ransomware group claims it holds 27.2 terabytes including engineering documents and ITAR-restricted material — a claim Turner will not address, and one the industry should think hard about. Analysis Texas Paused 474 Gigawatts of Grid Requests. The Next Day, Caterpillar Had Its Best Quarter Ever. On August 3, Governor Abbott ordered an audit of every data center in ERCOT's interconnection queue. On August 4, Caterpillar posted a record $20.5 billion quarter on data center demand and raised guidance. Both facts are true, and the gap between them is the whole story. Hugo Pegley · Aug 18, 2026
Analysis McKinsey Says AI Could Automate 39% of Construction's Desk Work. Nine Percent of the Industry Uses AI Daily. Two credible July datasets point in opposite directions: a McKinsey study on how much of construction's nonphysical work AI could automate, and survey data showing single-digit daily use. Analysis of what the gap actually measures — and who it favors. Hugo Pegley · Jul 30, 2026
Analysis New York Paused Data Center Permits. Fifteen Days Later, an Analyst Cut Caterpillar. Executive Order 62 froze state permitting for data centers of 50 MW and up. On July 29, Baird downgraded Caterpillar and cut its target from $1,200 to $900, naming that moratorium. The constraint on the AI buildout is turning out to be permitting, not power. Analysis The Camera That Never Blinks: How AI Safety Monitoring Is Changing Construction's Most Stubborn Problem Construction kills more workers than any other industry in the United States. A new generation of AI-powered computer vision tools promises to change that — by turning every camera on a job site into an always-on safety inspector. The technology is real. The adoption challenges are equally real. Hugo Pegley · Jun 12, 2026
Analysis AI Estimating Is Claiming 99% Accuracy. Here's What Contractors Actually Find The pitch is compelling: AI tools that complete takeoffs in hours, not days, with near-perfect accuracy on quantity counts. The reality is more complicated — and more interesting. A look at where AI estimating genuinely works, where it falls short, and what it means for the estimating profession.
