Kind Designs, a Miami company that 3D-prints coastal seawalls, has closed an oversubscribed $10 million Pre-Series A at a $70 million valuation, bringing its total funding to $21.5 million, according to the company. The round drew a conspicuous cast of backers — Mark Cuban, angel network NY Angels, TaMiami, former Washington, D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty and NBA forward Kyle Kuzma — and, the company says, was doubled from an original $5 million target after attracting close to $20 million in interest.

This is not, strictly, an artificial-intelligence story, and it’s worth being honest about that up front. Kind Designs sits in the built environment — the broader beat of how we make physical infrastructure — where the automation is in the printing, not a model. What makes it worth covering alongside the software rounds is the same shift showing up across construction: taking a slow, labor-heavy, high-carbon process and handing it to a robot.

Seawalls That Host Life

A conventional seawall is a flat concrete barrier: cheap to specify, hard on the ecosystem, and effective only until the water finds its way around or over it. Kind Designs, founded and led by Anya Freeman, prints its walls instead, using a large-scale robotic system that lets it texture the seaward face — ridges, crevices and pockets meant to mimic a natural shoreline and give oysters, barnacles and other marine life somewhere to settle. The company markets the products as Living Seawalls, Living Seawall Tiles and Living Shorelines, and pitches them as doing two jobs at once: holding back water while improving water quality and supporting the reef ecosystems a bare wall destroys.

The timing is the tailwind. Sea levels are rising, storms are intensifying, and the coastlines that need armoring — Miami’s first among them — are exactly the ones where property values make the spend defensible. Kind Designs says it has printed early projects in New York City, Charleston and Nassau.

The Traction, With the Usual Caveat

The financials the company disclosed sketch a business moving from proof to pipeline: about $1 million in revenue in 2025, roughly $10 million in contracted revenue booked, and an active pipeline it values at $175 million spanning municipalities, luxury hotels and the military — including what it describes as a recently awarded $2 million contract with the U.S. Navy. Those are company-provided figures rather than audited results, and a pipeline number in particular is a statement of ambition, not revenue. But the mix — public, private and defense buyers — is a credible spread for infrastructure that suddenly has a lot of demand and few modern alternatives.

The investor list is doing double duty as marketing. A Mark Cuban check and an NBA-player angel generate the kind of attention a seawall company would otherwise struggle to buy, and for a business that sells to city governments and developers, visibility is close to a moat.

The Additive-Manufacturing Thread

Kind Designs is one node in a small but growing set of companies betting that large-scale 3D printing changes how physical infrastructure gets made. In Europe, Hyperion Robotics just raised $7.4 million to print low-carbon concrete components in on-site “microfactories”; the parallel is instructive. Both argue that printing lets you put material only where it is structurally needed — less concrete, less carbon, less waste — and both are trying to prove that a printed structural part can clear the same engineering and permitting bar as a cast one. That certification hurdle, more than the technology, is what separates a striking demo from an industry standard.

What to Watch

The bull case is that Kind Designs owns a category — engineered, ecologically active coastal armor — right as climate adaptation budgets swing toward it, with a brand loud enough to win the municipal and luxury contracts that pipeline is built on. The risks are the ones every infrastructure-hardware company faces: printed marine structures have to survive decades of saltwater, storm loading and regulatory scrutiny, and converting a $175 million pipeline into delivered, paid-for walls is a multi-year test of manufacturing capacity, not a demo reel.

The numbers to watch are how much of that pipeline converts to signed contracts, whether the Navy job leads to repeat defense work, and how the earliest installed walls hold up in the water. If the printed seawalls perform and the permits keep clearing, Kind Designs has a rare thing in climate tech: a product people already want to buy. If they don’t, the cap table won’t hold back the tide.
